Exercise is the ONLY well accepted therapy to combat the muscle weakness and balance issues with PN. Given PN’s strong association with Type 2 diabetes, diet can also be a significant factor. The logic is unassailable and basic physiology is clear. But the evidence, bound up in all the conflicting issues of people living their lives, is messy. At best. So, using the tiny research funds that are available there have been some studies started to try to measure how exercise and diet can slow PN progress or restore physical capabilities. One is being conducted at the School of Nursing at the University of Maryland. We had two of the graduate students who are conducting that study come, describe what they are doing. They shared insights on how patient attitudes affected study participation and (hence) results. The difficulties of measuring the rffects of diet and exercise became abundantly clear. We will follow up and post a report on the results when they are released. (expected in 2019)
