Alcoholic Neuropathy
What is it?
- Chronic and excessive alcohol use over a long period of time can lead to nerve damage that can worsen if alcohol use continues
- If it is caught and alcohol consumption is stopped early, it is possible to minimize the permanent damage alcoholic neuropathy can cause
- Alcohol can impede the absorption of nutrients essential to nerve health
- Many providers advise patients even with non alcohol-related peripheral neuropathy to reduce alcohol consumption or stop it completely
How is it diagnosed?
- There is no specific test for alcoholic neuropathy — if a patient is diagnosed with any form of peripheral neuropathy (PN) and is prone to excessive drinking, medical providers may conclude that the PN is caused by alcohol use
- Specific signs of alcoholic neuropathy include feeling drunk or hungover even when sober
