Diet
Why is it important to eat the right way?
- Inflammation is part of the body’s defense mechanism against harmful substances, for instance it’s what happens when an injury causes swelling
- Chronic inflammation, however, is when the body stays in a state of heightened alert and overdrive, potentially causing and worsening chronic illnesses like peripheral neuropathy
- Eating anti-inflammatory foods is recommended to ease neuropathic pain
- One of the biggest culprits in chronic inflammation is refined sugar — the blood sugar spikes it causes can worsen neuropathy symptoms in patients with both diabetic and non-diabetic neuropathy
Our Members Suggest
- “Since being diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, I have cut refined sugar, alcohol, dairy, and gluten out of my diet. I can tell it has worked, because when I occasionally eat a dessert with refined sugar, my pain immediately worsens.” – Diva Parekh
- “I eat a ‘rainbow’ diet: plenty of colorful vegetables and fruits. I stay away from ‘triggers’ like processed meats, white bread, alcohol and sugary drinks and sugar.” – Bill Porter
