Shoes

In September, we presented Joe Ponsi at the PNSN monthly meeting. He gave a great talk on footwear and ways to take care of your feet. Ponsi is a poderathist who understands the needs of PN patents.

I treat everyone who comes in as though they have diabetic neuropathy, he said in his talk. That’s because knowing how to treat your feet is helpful, whether you have diabetes or not.

  1. I am looking for modifications to shoes for people with PN. I frequently feel that I am sliding in my shoes and it creates problems with balance. I understand about the loss of proproception (even though I can’t spell it), but was hoping to find something I could use in my shoes. If a sole or insole has a lot of cushion I feel nothing. Any suggestions or references are appreciated.

Sounds like your shoes could be too large. Do you have a good shoe store you can go to? Personally, with my lousy balance, I like shoes that have high sides and tie up firmly. But I’m a guy and retired and can get away with that. As the video indicated, shoes are a big deal with PN. In the DC area we have a chain called “The Good Feet Store” that claims to be such, though I have had no experience with them. At the next meeting I’ll try to remember to survey the attendees (who come from all over) to see if any of them have recommendations.
